I spent the weekend in Madison,
the capital of Wisconsin.
Directors and Associate Directors of
Humanities Institutes across the globe
gathered together to talk and think about
topics pertinent to our talking and thinking.
Then, every time I turned around,
there was another fancy reception to go to,
another museum gallery to explore,
another brilliant thinker to make me think,
another person important in the world.
I have been to many a conference,
but I say without hesitation:
This one was the best.
Then, at the end of each day,
I wandered through the city streets,
back to this gem of a hotel.
For four sweet nights,
I called this bed my very own;
and danced throughout
this bathroom-the-size-of-my-cottage.
And daily,
I looked out my window
on sites such as this.
I have stayed at many a hotel,
but I say without hesitation:
This one was the best.
When all of the thinking was over,
there was still talk to be had
so my new friends and I found a quintessential bar
and had ourselves an evening.
Capital, indeed.
