Then there was the Wildlife

Question:
Notice anything fishy
about this seemingly ordinary soccer game?
[Other than the small child standing
haphazardly in the goal, of course...]
Answer:
Dogs. Many of them.
It was not unusual to see these rangy mutts
strolling around the grounds,
napping in the available shade,
digging around in the manure,
being thrown around by rangy boys
or just hanging out as we played.

They served an important purpose
as guards of these precious hens,
charged with producing eggs for the children to eat.

My girls showed me other items for good eating
 in the gardens,
 in the trees,
in cages you didn't know were there
 and pens tucked away.
[And a good thing too--stinky!!]

But, hands down,
 my favorites were the goats,
just wandering around, eating whatever they pleased,
 running every which way,
 regardless of who was nearby,
 bleating their little hearts out:
Soccer game? What soccer game?
